In Samarkand, CMS COP14 encouraged the development of a Global Action Plan for the Conservation of the Steppe Eagle (Steppe Eagle GAP). This Action Plan has been drafted using an extensive consultative process with researchers and wider stakeholders from the majority of the key range states of the species for formal adoption at CMS COP15. This side event will present the key threats facing this iconic globally Endangered raptor, listed on CMS Appendices I & II, across its vast range of 62 Countries and Territories of which 42 CMS Parties) and outline the priority actions proposed in the Plan to address them.
We will hear from CMS Parties representing key range states including Kazakhstan and Saudi Arabia on their ongoing efforts and new commitments to implement the Plan. The discussion will highlight how these efforts align with broader migratory bird conservation frameworks, including the Central Asian Flyway Initiative, offering clear opportunities for synergy and collaborative actions among CMS Parties.
This event will build momentum and encourage action to implement the Steppe Eagle GAP before the scheduled discussion at COP. Please note that if the event takes place after the Plan’s adoption, equally it will provide Parties and wider stakeholders with the opportunity to explore practical collaborative actions that will contribute significantly to halting and reversing the decline of the Steppe Eagle, and ensuring its long-term survival along its flyways.
