The Saker Falcon (Falco cherrug) is one of the few species listed in CMS Appendix I with a geographically restricted listing. All national populations are included in Appendix I except those in Mongolia, reflecting the large size of the Mongolian population and the substantial conservation efforts underway there.
Under Resolution 11.18 (Rev. COP14), the Saker Falcon Task Force is developing an Adaptive Management System (AMS) to support conservation and sustainable use of the species. This innovative, science-based system aims to: halt ongoing population declines; lay the groundwork for long-term sustainable management, coordinated internationally through CMS mechanisms, and; establish national sustainable quotas for Appendix II populations.
This side event will provide CMS Parties and stakeholders with an overview of the AMS framework and objectives, insights into how adaptive management can reconcile conservation and sustainable use and will offer opportunities to engage in shaping implementation strategies.
During the side event the report “Changes in falconers’ practices and the impact of electrocution” will be launched. The report is the result of the ongoing cooperation between the Raptors MOU and the International Association for Falconry and Conservation of birds of prey.
The event aims to build momentum and support for Saker Falcon Document 26.7 ahead of the COP discussion. If held after the discussion, it will instead offer Parties and stakeholders an opportunity to explore practical next steps, strengthen partnerships, and contribute to the long-term survival of the Saker Falcon across its flyway.
