Meeting of the Range States of the Central Asian Flyway

Range States Meeting on the Institutional Framework and next steps for the Central Asian Flyway
The meeting will build on the history of previous meetings of the CAF Range States, and the developments and joint activities undertaken by the Government of India, the Secretariats of CMS, the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) and the Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Birds of Prey in Africa and Eurasia (Raptors MOU), and follows on the decisions of the 13th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CMS, held in Gandhinagar, India, in 2020.
Objectives of the meeting
The main objectives of the meeting will be to
- develop and, if possible, agree on an institutional framework for the CAF
- draw conclusions from a CAF conservation situation analysis report launched in 2022 and coordinated by BirdLife International, and discuss priority areas for implementation
- discuss and agree on a draft roadmap for updating the CMS CAF Action Plan
- further develop and agree on the next steps to inform draft decisions to be proposed to the 14th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CMS.
Background
Through provisions of CMS Resolution 12.11 (Rev.COP13) Flyways and Decision 13.46, the Conference of the Parties to CMS at its 13th meeting (COP13), held in Gandhinagar, India, in February 2020, called upon the CAF Range States to collaborate with the Government of India and the Secretariats of CMS and AEWA during the inter-sessional period between COP13 and COP14, including through an inter-governmental meeting, to establish, by COP14, under the umbrella of CMS, an institutional framework to support the implementation of conservation action for migratory birds and their habitats in the region, and to update the Action Plan for the Conservation of Migratory Waterbirds and their Habitats.
