A side event is being co-hosted by the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), BirdLife International, the European Federation for Hunting and Conservation (FACE), and the Arctic Migratory Birds Initiative (AMBI) of the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF). 

 

Illegal killing, trapping and trade of migratory birds are low-risk and high-profit activities with multiple dimensions that affect many migratory birds such as songbirds, water birds and birds of prey, for reasons including for human consumption or for cage-bird trade and are prevalent at the global level. 

 

Discussions on the challenges in tackling illegal killing, taking and trade of wild birds will be held during the session. 

 

At the session, the focus will be on presenting the challenges that remain while showcasing the work being undertaken by countries, MEAs and NGO and the CMS Intergovernmental Task Force on Illegal Killing, Taking and Trade of Migratory Birds in the Mediterranean (MIKT), the Bern Convention’s Tunis Action Plan, CAFF and the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership, especially in the Mediterranean and the East-Asian Australasian Flyway. 

 

Presentations from CMS, BirdLife and FACE on the work implemented and ongoing will be made, which will be followed by a multi-governmental panel with countries representing a wide-geographical distribution.

 

Italy, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Australia and India will provide insights on the status and trends of the problem across different regions and provided opportunities to learn from and explore strategies and implementation actions employed to address illegal killing, taking and trade of migratory and wild birds.
