Fact Sheet on White-eared kob Migration in South Sudan & Ethiopia
In one of Africa’s most spectacular migrations, about 5,000,000 (±882,000) white-eared kob migrate across the vast wetlands of southern South Sudan and Gambella National Park, Ethiopia. The majority of kob spend the wet season (May-October) in and between Badingilo and Boma National Parks in the southern extent of their migratory range. The migration is complex, with the population exhibiting several unique movement patterns in response to seasonal floods and human activity. From November to January, many kob travel either northeast towards their dry season range in either the Djom swamps north of Boma and the Akobo River Basin, or they travel northwest of Badingilo. Another segment of the population has traditionally spent the dry season in and near Gambella National Park before moving southwest towards wet season ranges.
