This side event will present the main outcomes of the International Workshop on Large Felid Conflict, held in Campo Grande (Brazil) in August 2025, which brought together experts from Brazil, India, the United States, Africa, and Latin America. Organized by Instituto SOS Pantanal in partnership with Onçafari, Instituto Onça Pintada and Instituto Homem Pantaneiro, the workshop created a multidisciplinary space to discuss risks, causes, and solutions related to human–jaguar and broader large felid conflicts. Over two days, participants debated prevention and response strategies involving jaguars, pumas, lions, tigers and other large felids, integrating public policies, field experiences, and local knowledge to support species conservation, community safety, and responsible ecotourism. The event also highlighted interinstitutional monitoring initiatives in Corumbá (MS), including protocols for communicating with local communities and guidelines for livestock and domestic animal management. Key topics addressed included animal translocation, emergency response, coexistence protocols, and the importance of environmental education. The workshop launched the drafting of a national technical guidance document for coexistence with large felids in Brazil, emphasizing the need for coordinated, science-based and community-led approaches.
The side event at COP15 will present these results, discuss next steps for implementing the coexistence protocol, and explore opportunities for international collaboration within the CMS framework.
