IUCN Africa Protected Areas Congress (APAC)

The IUCN Africa Protected Areas Congress (APAC) is the first ever continent-wide gathering of African leaders, citizens, and interest groups to discuss the role of protected areas in conserving nature, safeguarding Africa’s iconic wildlife, delivering vital life-supporting ecosystem services, promoting sustainable development while conserving Africa’s cultural heritage and traditions.

The overarching objective of the IUCN Africa Protected Areas Congress (APAC) is to position Africa’s protected and conserved areas within the broader goals of economic development and community well-being and to increase the understanding of the vital role parks play in conserving biodiversity and delivering the ecosystem services that underpin human welfare and livelihoods.

The Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) is pleased to be present and contribute at various levels to the week-long congress for the long-term conservation of nature in Africa.

CMS Executive Secretary, Amy Fraenkel will speak at the APAC Leadership Dialogue Plenary on the "Challenges and Opportunities for Protected and Conserved Areas" (Tuesday 19, 8-10 KCC Auditorium).

Ms Fraenkel will make a keynote address on "CMS and Africa regional perspectives", including the link between connectivity and effectiveness during the Stream 1 Parallel Plenary - Promoting effective and equitable networks of PCAs in Africa (Tuesday 19, 14-17:30 KCC Auditorium).

The Executive Secretary will also take part as a panelist at the event for the launch of the East African Community (EAC) Transboundary Wildlife Conservation Areas Network (055-PAC-BIO-GOV) - EAC, CMS and IUCN (15:30-17:30).

The CMS Secretariat is co-hosting the East African Community (EAC) Pavillion and a number of CMS events are scheduled to take place during the APAC.

APAC takes place from 18-23 July 2022 in the Kigali Convention Centre (KCC), Kigali, Rwanda.
