Delivering a nature positive, rapid, just transition to renewable energy Tuesday, December 5, 2023 12:00  - 13:00 PM IUCN Pavillion -Presentation Room, Blue Zone

We must protect and restore biodiversity to deliver on climate action. Simultaneously, we need a rapid and just transition to renewable energy.

But if renewable energy developments are sited only to maximise energy production, approx. 11 million ha of natural habitat could be lost globally, releasing 415 million tonnes of stored carbon, undermining the climate benefits of renewable energy. It would also severely limit our ability to deliver on the global goals to halt and reverse biodiversity loss under the new Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework with inappropriately sited wind turbines and power lines on land and offshore, causing habitat loss, death from collision and electrocutions, and displacement to birds, bats and aquatic species.

This event will showcase how collaboration between different stakeholders can identify and address opportunities, barriers, and challenges for the mainstreaming and scaling-up of nature-safe renewable energy deployment around the world to deliver a nature positive future.

Event type: Moderated panel dialogue and open audience Q&A

Speakers: Amy Fraenkel, Executive Secretary, CMS; Rachel Asante-Owusu, Senior Programme Coordinator, IUCN; UNFCCC representative; Development bank representative; Government representative.

Moderator: David Howell, Senior Energy Policy Officer, BirdLife International
