Eighth Meeting of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) Energy Task Force (ETF) - Online

The CMS Energy Task Force (ETF) has convened annually since 2016. At its 7th meeting, held from 24 to 26 April 2024 in Madrid, Spain, ETF members and stakeholders reviewed the emerging mandate from CMS COP14, agreed to establish several dedicated Working Groups, and initiated the process of updating the ETF Programme of Work.

The 8th ETF Meeting will take place online from 16 to 17 September 2025. This meeting presents a unique opportunity to collaboratively review the progress of the ETF Working Groups, finalize and adopt the new ETF Work Plan for 2026–2032, and define key priorities and next steps in preparation for CMS COP15.

Meeting Objectives

• Review progress in the implementation of the ETF Work Plan 2021–2024
• Discuss and potentially approve the new ETF Work Plan 2026–2032
• Share updates from the ETF Working Groups for 2024 and 2025
• Discuss and endorse strategic documents related to the Working Groups and COP15
• Prepare for the 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP15)
• Advance understanding of emerging issues related to the sustainable planning of energy infrastructure

Background  

The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) and the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) recognise the need to integrate the conservation of migratory species across the energy sector and have adopted a number of resolutions and guidelines to this end. The CMS Energy Task Force was established in 2015 in accordance with Resolution 11.27 (Rev. COP13) Renewable Energy and Migratory Species to support the implementation of these resolutions and the use of relevant guidelines.
