Today, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) announced that it now recognizes two distinct species of African elephants: The Forest Elephant and the Savanna Elephant. The revised assessment of African elephants also has found that the Forest Elephant is Critically Endangered and the Savanna Elephant Endangered, downgrading the status of both species from their previous classification as Vulnerable.

The Republic of Angola has joined the Agreement on the Conservation of Gorillas and Their Habitats, also known as the Gorilla Agreement. Angola is the eighth of ten Range States in which gorillas occur to become a Party to the Agreement, joining the Central African Republic, Congo (Brazzaville), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Kinshasa), Gabon, Nigeria, Rwanda and Uganda. The accession of Angola to the Gorilla Agreement took effect on 1 January 2021.

The Central African Republic has ratified the Convention bringing the number of Parties to 131.

The Environment Agency — Abu Dhabi (EAD) announced that two Addax calves have been born in Chad. These calves are the first wild-born calves from a herd of 15 Addax, which were translocated from the United Arab Emirates to Chad in November 2019. These new-born calves give rise to renewed hope for the conservation of the Addax, which is on the verge of extinction.  Today, only 75 to 100 individuals remain in the wild.

The African Elephant Fund Steering Committee launches the tenth round of call for proposals to the African Elephant Fund. The purpose of this call is to allow African Elephant Range States to seek emergency funding to address elephant conservation challenges related to COVID 19 and to support the implementation of the African Elephant Action Plan.

On Saturday, 9 May 2020, people around the world will celebrate World Migratory Bird Day – a global campaign dedicated to raising awareness of migratory birds and the need for international cooperation to conserve them. This year’s theme “Birds Connect Our World” highlights the importance of conserving and restoring the ecological connectivity and integrity of ecosystems that support the natural cycles that are essential for the survival and well-being of migratory birds.
