Nations List 12 Vulture Species to Tackle Population Decline in Africa

A further eighteen birds of prey species have been listed at an international meeting of government representatives and experts this week in Trondheim, Norway. Seven of these species under threat are critically endangered according to the IUCN Red List.

Countries Meet to Tackle Poisoning of Birds in Southern Africa

Representatives of countries and wildlife experts met in Cape Town, South Africa on 24 August, to address poisoning of migratory birds, a problem that also threatens important predators. The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) and the CMS Memorandum of Understanding on Birds of Prey (CMS Raptors MoU), all three instruments administered by the United Nations Environment Programme, have convened the international meeting.

Migratory sharks in the Gulf of Gabès: by-catch, ecology and critical habitats

Investigation conducted in Tunisia showed that several elasmobranch species (Rays and sharks)   occur along Tunisian coasts mainly in the Gulf of Gabès; 65 species were recorded, among them eight rays and five sharks are common.

Sharks of the Arabian Seas - an identification guide

This guide, which was kindly funded with voluntary contributions from the German government and and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), was co-authored by Rima W. Jabada and David A. Ebert. It provides identification keys to 68 species of sharks encountered in the Arabian Seas region, and an additional 14 species of sharks and batoids. These include all shark species whose trade or conservation status is regulated through international instruments as well as the ray and sawfish species known to occur in the region.

AEWA Standing Committee Meeting Held in Uganda

The 10th Meeting of the AEWA Standing Committee (StC10) was held from 8 to 10 July in Kampala at the kind invitation of the Ugandan Government. The meeting was the first AEWA Standing Committee to take place in Africa and was an important milestone in the run-up to the 6th Session of the Meeting of the Parties (MOP6) due to take place 9-14 November 2015 in Bonn, Germany.

Opinion: Natural World Heritage Sites – Sharing the Future

The 39th Session of the World Heritage Committee is meeting in Bonn, a stone’s throw from the headquarters of the Convention on Migratory Species and several of its associated agreements. Jacques Trouvilliez, Executive Secretary of the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA), and Rüdiger Strempel, Secretary of the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat, examine the importance of those sites inscribed in the list for their natural rather than cultural qualities.
