The Joint Meeting of the Bern Convention Network of Special Focal Points (SFPs) on Eradication of Illegal Killing, Trapping and Trade in Wild Birds and the CMS Intergovernmental Task Force on Illegal Killing, Taking and Trade of Migratory Birds in the Mediterranean (MIKT) will take place from 9 to 11 June 2021 online.
The Meeting will bring together members and observers to CMS MIKT and the SFPs on Eradication of Illegal Killing, Trapping and Trade in Wild Birds, under the Bern Convention.
The meeting will provide an update on the work implemented to combat Illegal Killing of Birds (IKB) in the Mediterranean since the last Joint Meeting of the Bern SFPs Network and the CMS MIKT, in May 2019, in Rome and agree on the workplan for the way forward. The meeting will open on Wednesday, 9 June 2021 at 10:00 (CET) and will close on Friday, 11 June 2021 around 13:00 (CET).
Goals of the Meeting
It has been almost two years since the last Joint meeting in Rome 2019 and last year, was the deadline for the implementation of the Tunis Action Plan 2013-2020 (TAP) and the MIKT Programme of Work 2016-2020 (POW), while in Rome in 2019, the Rome Strategic Plan for 2030 was endorsed. The meeting aims to build momentum for the implementation of the Rome Strategic Plan 2020-2030 endorsed in Rome in 2019 and adopted in December 2019 by Bern Convention parties and 2020 through online communication for MIKT countries. The meeting participants will discuss and endorse a draft work plan for the period 2021-2025 for the implementation of the Rome Strategic Plan and a proposal for a Methodology to assess the scale and scope of IKB in each country.
The meeting will also provide updates on the responses to the 2nd Scoreboard to Assess the Progress in Combating Illegal Killing, Taking and Trade of Wild Birds submission of 2020, and be informed about action by members and observers. They will also discuss an appraisal of the work done through the Programme of Work for the period 2016-2020.
Background
Illegal killing, taking and trade of migratory birds (IKB) has been a growing concern over the last decades in the Mediterranean region. In response to this threat, in 2014 the 11th Conference of the Parties to CMS adopted CMS Resolution 11.16 (Rev. COP13) to establish the Intergovernmental Task Force on Illegal Killing, Taking and Trade of Migratory Birds in the Mediterranean (MIKT). MIKT members and observers have been actively working towards the eradication of the illegal killing, taking and trade of migratory birds. This will be the 4th meeting of the Task Force (MIKT 4), after a first in Cairo in 2016 (MIKT 1), a second in Malta in 2017 (MIKT 2) and a third in Rome 2019 (MIKT 3). Since 2017 these meetings are held jointly with the Bern Convention Special Focal Points on IKB.
The European Union was recognized as Champion Plus for their generous support and commitment towards addressing Illegal Killing, Taking and Trade of Migratory Birds in the Mediterranean for the period 2018 - 2023. This activity has been funded with the contribution granted by the European Commission under the Migratory Species Champion Programme and through the Global Public Goods and Challenges (GPGC Programme) Cooperation Agreements with UNEP.
