The CMS Office - Abu Dhabi is the CMS Secretariat’s largest out-posted office. It is hosted by the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD), on behalf of the Government of the United Arab Emirates. The office includes the Coordinating Unit of the Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Birds of Prey in Africa and Eurasia (Raptors MOU), and the Secretariat of the Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation and Management of Dugongs and their Habitats throughout Their Range (Dugong MOU). The office aims to address common threats to migratory species of regional interest, such as marine mammals and marine turtles in relation to by-catch, while promoting CMS and its agreements in the West Asian and north-west Indian Ocean regions.
Raptors MOU Coordinating Unit
The Raptors MOU entered into effect on 1 November 2008. Signatory States implement activities guided by an Action Plan annexed to the MOU which is designed to improve legal protection, safeguard important sites and flyways, conserve habitat, raise public awareness, monitor populations and support implementing partners.
The Coordinating Unit of the Raptors MOU aims to facilitate and coordinate conservation actions under the Action Plan for 93 species of migratory birds of prey in Africa and Eurasia. The aim is to halt and reverse population declines, alleviate existing threats and to anticipate, reduce and avoid potential and new threats to birds of prey. Information on recent activities can be found on the Raptors MOU webpage here.
Dugong MOU Secretariat
The Dugong MOU entered into effect on 31 October 2007. Signatory States implement activities guided by a Conservation and Management Plan (CMP) annexed to the MOU which has nine objectives addressing conservation of dugongs and their seagrass habitats, awareness and education, and cross-cutting issues.
The Dugong MOU Secretariat facilitates and coordinates conservation actions under the CMP through the Dugong, Seagrass and Coastal Communities Initiative (DSCCI). The DSCCI aims to achieve the nine objectives of the CMP to ensure the long-term survival of dugongs and their seagrass habitats throughout their extensive range.
