Global Dugong Genetics Project

The Global Dugong Genetics Project aims to examine the phylogeography of the dugong based on historical samples from throughout the dugong’s range. It will update conservation and management actions through mapping the distribution of discrete dugong populations; identifying historical and potential migratory routes; and highlighting small populations as a priority for conservation. The Project was a collaboration between James Cook University and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

Dugong and Seagrass Research Toolkit

The Dugong and Seagrass Research Toolkit is an initiative by TOTAL, Total Abu Al Bukhoosh, Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi and CMS Dugong MOU to provide an easily accessible online resource that incorporates decision-making for the selection of the most appropriate methodologies for studies of dugongs, seagrasses and the associated human communities.

Different Male vs. Female Breeding Periodicity helps Mitigate Offspring Sex Ratio Skews in Sea Turtles.

The implications of climate change for global biodiversity may be profound with those species with little capacity for adaptation being thought to be particularly vulnerable to warming. A classic case of groups for concern are those animals exhibiting temperature-dependent sex-determination (TSD), such as sea turtles, where climate warming may produce single sex populations and hence extinction. We show that, globally, female biased hatchling sex ratios dominate sea turtle populations (exceeding 3:1 in >50% records), which, at-a-glance, reiterates concerns for extinction.

In Memoriam - Ms. Eugenia Lanovenko

Eugenia Lanovenko was the leading ornithologist of Uzbekistan. She was born in 1950 in Siberia, but moved with her parents to Uzbekistan, where she graduated from the Tashkent National University and for the most part of her life worked at the Ornithological Laboratory of the Institute of Zoology, Uzbekistan Academy of Science. Eugenia was involved in preparation of the National Strategy on Biodiversity Conservation in Uzbekistan and participated in numerous international projects supported by GEF, BirdLife International, Wetlands International, and many others.

The Egyptian Vulture is a long distance migrant, and is found throughout Eurasia and Africa. The population that is targeted by this Action Plan breeds across the Balkans, Central Asia and Caucasian region, and migrates to wintering grounds that largely overlap with the range of the resident population of the same species in the Middle East, Central and East Africa.
