Comoros Pledges to Conserve Threatened Migratory Birds of Prey

Union of the Comoros signed the CMS Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Birds of Prey in Africa and Eurasia (Raptors MoU) on 6 October 2015 in Trondheim, Norway. This brings the total number of Signatories to 53.

The Signing Ceremony took place during the Second Meeting of Signatories to the Raptors MoU, which was held 5 - 8 October 2015. The MoU was signed by Mr. Mohamed Said Youssouf, Secretary General of the Ministry of Production, Environment, Energy, Industry and Handicrafts.

The migratory birds of prey that can be found in Comoros cover long distances from their breeding territories to wintering grounds in East and South Africa, and Madagascar. Comoros is important due to its privileged location equidistant from continental Africa and Madagascar. Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus), Eleonora’s Falcon (Falco eleonorae), Sooty Falcon (Falco concolor) and Black Kite (Milvus migrans), all Western Palearctic species, occur in Comoros.

The Raptors MoU will enter into effect for Comoros on 1 November 2015.
