Illegal Take and Trade of Marine Turtles in the IOSEA Region

Illegal take of marine turtles can assume various forms, from poaching of animals and eggs on nesting beaches to illegal take of animals at sea.   Typically, green and leatherback turtles are hunted for their meat; the hawksbill turtle is hunted for its carapace as the raw material for craftwork; while the eggs of loggerhead and olive ridley turtles are considered a delicacy.  Turtle meat consumption reportedly occurs in 75% of IOSEA Signatory States, while trade in shell products seems to be predominant in East Asian countries.  Whereas numerous investigations in this regard have been unde

Flyway Action Plan for the Conservation of the Balkan and Central Asian Populations of the Egyptian Vulture

BSPB is the BirdLife International partner in Bulgaria. They have successfully led a previous collaborative project with UNEP/CMS entitled “Capacity Building to support the conservation of migratory Egyptian Vultures from the Western Palearctic on their wintering grounds in Ethiopia, Sudan and Chad” in 2012-2013.  Subsequently, they have been granted support by the European Union Life+ fund to develop an international Flyway Action Plan (FAP) for the Balkan Region.

RECALLING that the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals 1979 (CMS) encourages international cooperative action to conserve migratory species;
 
CONSIDERING that migratory raptors constitute an important part of the global biological diversity which, in keeping with the spirit of the Convention on Biological Diversity 1992 and Agenda 21, should be conserved for the benefit of present and future generations;

This Guidance has been developed to provide advice for current and future National Contact Points (NCPs) of the CMS Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Birds of Prey in Africa and Eurasia (Raptors MoU). The document sets out the function of NCPs, as well as providing information about the role of the Coordinating Unit of the Raptors MoU.

Final Report with Draft MoU and Action Plan 
 
The cumulative evidence of national or regional declines of raptors, increasing pressures on their populations, and apparent failings in current conservation measures to redress the situation, led the VI World Conference on Birds of Prey and Owls (Budapest, May 2003) to adopt a resolution proposing the establishment of a new multilateral agreement for the conservation of African-Eurasian migratory raptors, under the auspices of the Bonn Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals.
