World Wetlands Day

Bonn, 2 February 2015 - To mark World Wetlands Day today, Jacques Trouvilliez, the Executive Secretary of AEWA has written an opinion article (“Op-Ed”) emphasizing the importance of wetlands for the conservation of many migratory species and especially the waterbirds of the African-Eurasian Flyway.

“The Ramsar Convention has a broad remit with regard to the conservation of wetlands, which play a number of important ecological and environmental roles – from providing sources of fresh water to protecting the coastline from the effects of rising water levels.  But we should bear in the mind the full name of the Ramsar Convention with its specific reference to waterfowl habitat which makes the Convention an obvious choice as a partner for AEWA  and vice versa” said Jacques Trouvilliez.

Jacques’ article, entitled “The Future of Wetlands, the Future of Waterbirds – an intercontinental connection” can be found on the CMS and AEWA websites.

World Wetlands Day is celebrated on the 2 February each year marking the anniversary of the signing of the Ramsar Convention, the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, especially as Waterfowl Habitat.  The theme this year is “Wetlands for Our Future”.  More information can be found on the dedicated webpage on the Ramsar Convention’s website.
