Trinidad and Tobago - CMS Party No. 127

CMS is pleased to welcome Trinidad and Tobago as the 127th Party to the Convention with effect from 1st December. Trinidad and Tobago is situated in the Caribbean and this island republic shares maritime borders with Barbados, Grenada, Guyana and Venezuela. The country has an area of just over 5,000 km2 with the two main islands giving the country its name accounting for 98 per cent.

Great Boost for Conservation of Grassland Birds and Flyways in the Americas

The Second Meeting of Signatories (MOS2) of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the Conservation of Southern South American Migratory Grassland Bird Species and their Habitats took place from 24 to 25 July 2018 in the city of Florianópolis, at the kind invitation of the Government of Brazil. The MOU’s Action Plan was updated until the year 2023 and specific objectives were developed for the protection and sustainable management of grasslands which are of importance to migratory birds and the ecosystem services they provide.

IPBES 6th Plenary Session Adopts Five Major Assessment Reports

Meeting in Medellín, Colombia from 17 to 24 March, the 6th session of the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has adopted five major assessment reports. Three years in development and costing US$5 million, the five reports – one on regional and global land degradation and restoration and four evaluating the contributions of biodiversity and nature to people in four world regions – Africa, the Americas, Asia & the Pacific and Europe & Central Asia – have been prepared by over 550 leading international experts from more than 100 countries.

Global analysis of the effect of local climate on the hatchling output of leatherback turtles. Scientific reports

The most recent climate change projections show a global increase in temperatures along with precipitation changes throughout the 21st century. However, regional projections do not always match global projections and species with global distributions may exhibit varying regional susceptibility to climate change. Here we show the effect of local climatic conditions on the hatchling output of leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) at four nesting sites encompassing the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. We found a heterogeneous effect of climate.

Global Distribution of Two Fungal Pathogens Threatening Endangered Sea Turtles

Nascent fungal infections are currently considered as one of the main threats for biodiversity and ecosystem health, and have driven several animal species into critical risk of extinction. Sea turtles are one of the most endangered groups of animals and only seven species have survived to date. Here, we described two pathogenic species, i.e., Fusarium falciforme and Fusarium keratoplasticum, that are globally distributed in major turtle nesting areas for six sea turtle species and that are implicated in low hatch success.

Workshop in Bolivia Helps Prepare Latin American and Caribbean Region for COP12

The CMS Secretariat, in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Water of Bolivia, has concluded a fruitful Regional Preparatory Workshop, which took place from 18 to 20 July in La Paz, Bolivia. The primary objective of the pre-COP workshop for Latin America and the Caribbean was to strengthen capacity and form regional alliances on the most relevant issues of COP12 to National Focal Points (NFPs) from Latin America and the Caribbean.
