Media Advisory - World Migratory Bird Day 2020

On Saturday, 9 May 2020, people around the world will celebrate World Migratory Bird Day – a global campaign dedicated to raising awareness of migratory birds and the need for international cooperation to conserve them. This year’s theme “Birds Connect Our World” highlights the importance of conserving and restoring the ecological connectivity and integrity of ecosystems that support the natural cycles that are essential for the survival and well-being of migratory birds.

Global Dugong Genetics Project

The Global Dugong Genetics Project aims to examine the phylogeography of the dugong based on historical samples from throughout the dugong’s range. It will update conservation and management actions through mapping the distribution of discrete dugong populations; identifying historical and potential migratory routes; and highlighting small populations as a priority for conservation. The Project was a collaboration between James Cook University and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

Prioritization of Marine Turtle Management Projects: A Protocol that Accounts for Threats to Different Life History Stages

Project prioritization protocols are an important tool for allocating conservation resources efficiently, and have been applied to a range of species and ecosystems. Current approaches are inadequate when applied to species with distinct threats impacting different and/or multiple life history stages, such as sea turtles. We develop a model that integrates the benefit of any management project on a population by way of its expected population growth rate, including projects targeting different and/or multiple life history stages.

The Sea Turtle Rookery at Gnaraloo Bay, Western Australia: Using Nocturnal Observations to Validate Diurnal Track Interpretations.

Critical gaps remain in our understanding of many sea turtle nesting aggregations in remote or undeveloped regions. Here, we summarize the first 8 yrs of systematic monitoring of the rookery at Gnaraloo Bay, Western Australia. Diurnal track surveys on this approximately 7-km mainland beach were conducted daily during nesting seasons 2008/09 to 2015/16.

Twenty Years of Turtle Tracks: Marine Turtle Nesting Activity at Remote Locations in the Pilbara, Western Australia

Little is known about the biology and ecology of marine turtles in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and most potential habitat is unconfirmed and, therefore, undescribed. Understanding basic biological parameters at a regional level is critically important for effective long-term management.

Reconstructed Paternal Genotypes Reveal Variable Rates of Multiple Paternity at Three Rookeries of Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta caretta) in Western Australia.

Female sea turtles are promiscuous, with clutches of eggs often sired by multiple males and rates of multiple paternity varying greatly within and across species. We investigated levels of multiple paternity in loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) from three rookeries in Western Australia by analysing polymorphic species-specific genetic markers.

High-Density Loggerhead Sea Turtle Nesting on Dirk Hartog Island, Western Australia

The Western Australian population of loggerhead turtles, Caretta caretta, is recognized as a single genetic stock (Dutton et al. 2002; FitzSimmons et al. 1996; Limpus 2008). Nesting spans approximately 520 km from Steep Point (southwest of Denham) to the Muiron Islands (northeast of Exmouth) (Baldwin et al. 2003). Dirk Hartog Island is close to the southern end of this range.

Fourth and Final Pre-COP12 Workshop Held in Brisbane

After La Paz, Addis Ababa and Bonn, the fourth and final pre-COP workshop was held in Brisbane, Australia from 28 to 30 August for representatives of CMS Parties in the Oceania region. Top of the region’s priorities were the marine species proposals, along with other marine issues, the need to link work done under CMS with other obligations relating to other international fora, such as the UN Oceans Conference, the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and other Multilateral Environment Agreements (MEAs).
