Sing, Fly, Soar – Like a Bird!

“Sing, Fly, Soar – Like a Bird!” is the theme of this year’s World Migratory Bird Day, an annual global campaign dedicated to raising awareness of migratory birds and the need for international cooperation to conserve them. This year the campaign will focus on the phenomena of “bird song” and “bird flight” as a way to inspire and connect people of all ages around the world in their shared desire to celebrate migratory birds and to unite in a common, global effort to protect birds and the habitats they need to survive.

Emerging Threat of Deep-Sea Mining Discussed at 4th Meeting of the Signatories of Pacific Islands Cetaceans MOU

Organized in cooperation with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), the 4th Meeting of the Signatories of Pacific Islands Cetaceans MOU (PIC MOS4) took place virtually 5 - 6 August 2021. Participants discussed pressing conservation issues ranging from entanglement, fish aggregating devices, marine tourism to strandings, aquatic wild meat, and climate change.

Ambassador for Migratory Species Sacha Dench Embarks on Flight around Britain to Raise Climate Awareness

Ambassador for the UN’s Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), Sacha Dench has taken off on the Round Britain Climate Challenge – a groundbreaking expedition to circumnavigate mainland Britain in an electric paramotor. Sacha Dench is making the 3,000-mile journey to mark the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) taking place in Glasgow later this year. Launched from Glasgow, Scotland, the expedition will see Sacha flying anti-clockwise around the coast of Britain for 6 weeks.

Launch of Interactive Atlas “TurtleNet”: A Milestone in Marine Turtle Conservation

On the occasion of  World Sea Turtle Day 2021, “TurtleNet”, an interactive atlas that shows nesting, courtship, feeding and migration routes of marine turtles has been launched. The new online Marine Turtle Breeding and Migration Atlas, developed by Queensland’s Department of Environment and Science (DES) in collaboration with the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), brings together decades of Australian and global data.

Dugong and Seagrass Toolkit Selected Among Top 25 UAE Government Innovations

The Dugong and Seagrass Toolkit has been selected as one of the 25 most noteworthy innovations in the Government sector of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre for Government Innovation. The selection was determined after a rigorous screening and assessment process where several contenders showcased their projects over a period of one year.

UN General Assembly Adopts Resolution to Underscore Importance of Ecological Connectivity

On April 16 2021, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 75/271 "Nature knows no borders: transboundary cooperation a key factor for biodiversity conservation, restoration and sustainable use." The UN Resolution, originally proposed by Kyrgyzstan and sponsored by 60 other countries, is unprecedented. It recognizes for the first time the importance of maintaining and enhancing connectivity among ecosystems and habitats for the conservation and restoration of biodiversity.

IUCN World Conservation Congress Resolution Calls to Include Ecological Connectivity in the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework

Ahead of its session planned for September 2021, the International Union Conservation Nature (IUCN) World Conservation Congress (WCC-2020), adopted Resolution (073) on Ecological connectivity conservation in the post-2020 global biodiversity framework: from local to international levels which has already entered into force as part of the body of the IUCN's general policy.
