Preventing Pandemics Together - Nature4Health Applications Now Welcome

Bonn, 18 August 2022 – The Nature for Health (N4H) initiative is currently inviting low-and middle-income countries to apply for technical support in implementing preventative One Health measures around the world.

N4H is a global initiative, working to reduce future pandemics and related health risks by fostering locally developed and integrated approaches to secure the health of people, animals, and the environment at large.

Supported by the Government of Germany, the initiative brings together leading UN agencies, Intergovernmental Organizations and civil society groups in the field of environment and health.

The N4H is currently looking for country partners to implement preventative measures with the technical support of the N4H Consortium. The consortium will support interested, eligible countries/ jurisdictions (including sub-national or regional entities) in implementing One Health approaches.

If selected, countries will receive technical support which will lead to an improved understanding of the links between biodiversity, climate and health. Based on this understanding, the N4H initiative will support the collaborative development of locally relevant and cross-sectorally integrated policies and actions, which will help strengthen effective and lasting multi-sectoral governance structures which will contribute to preventing future pandemics.

With an initial budget of US$2 million per jurisdiction (for a total of 16-18 supported countries or regions), the N4H Initiative will take a phased approach over the next eight years, beginning with countries/jurisdictions where biodiversity is under threat and there are substantial risks of zoonotic disease spillover.

The initiative has received an initial contribution of EUR 50 million from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) via Germany’s International Climate Initiative (IKI). The N4H Consortium includes the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the EcoHealth Alliance.

Expression of Interest (EOI) for the first round of applications to become a partner jurisdiction of Nature for Health (N4H) Initiative can be submitted until the 21 October 2022.
