CMS Partners with Biodiversity Related Organizations to Address Species Extinction

Bonn,
28 May 2013
- The Convention on Migratory Species has embarked on the Friends of Target 12 initiative since it was launched at the CBD COP in October 2011. On this occasion, Officer in Charge Bert Lenten expressed CMS’s great interest in supporting the initiative. It is the mandate of CMS working towards preventing the extinction of migratory species listed on Appendix I of the Convention.

The partnership – Friends of Target 12 – has been established in accordance with the relevant Aichi Biodiversity Target to prevent further extinctions of species and improve the conservation status of the most endangered ones. The Target pursues an objective, which is essential to the work of the Convention:

“By 2020, the extinction of known threatened species has been prevented and their conservation status, particularly of those most in decline, has been improved and sustained.”

Friends of Target 12 is a partnership of organizations and institutions which bring their forces together to support countries to achieve Aichi Biodiversity Target 12. It will advise governments in their efforts to prevent further extinctions of threatened species and improve the conservation status of the most endangered ones.

CMS is one of the partners of the Friends of Target 12 initiative.
