CMS Family Participates in Bonn Marathon

Bonn, 7 April 2014 – several intrepid members of the CMS and AEWA Secretariats took part in the annual Bonn Marathon on Sunday, 6 April with three individuals running in the half marathon and three teams of four participating in the team race over the full 42-kilometre distance.   CMS Science Adviser, Marco Barbieri completed the half Marathon in 1 hour 56 minutes, with colleagues Marie Mévellec and Melissa Sanfourche taking just over two hours.  All three teams recorded very similar times with each finishing in just over four hours.  Weather conditions were just about perfect – dry and cool – which also suited the support team standing along the route cheering the competitors on accompanied by the Secretariat mascot, a life-sized inflatable model of a bottle-nose dolphin.  All the CMS Family runners wore attractive blue t-shirts with the slogan “We swim, we fly, we rUN” with stylized designs of a dolphin, a swallow and an elephant – representing marine, avian and terrestrial species.

“It was incredible to be part of the excitement of nearly 15,000 runners participating in the Marathon in Bonn, Germany’s UN City.   There was also a great turn-out by the CMS Family and the wider UN Community in Bonn” said CMS Executive Secretary, Bradnee Chambers, who was supporting the runners with live tweets from the finish line on Bonn’s market square.
