CMS Capacity-Building Strategy to Reach out to South-East Asia

Bonn, 24 October 2015 - The CMS Secretariat, together with the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity and the UNEP Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (UNEP/ROAP), is preparing the first regional capacity building workshop for Non-Parties in South-East Asia. It will take place in Quezon and Balanga City, the Philippines from 27-29 October of this year. Facilitated by the next host of the Conference of the Parties (CMS COP12), the Philippines will seize the opportunity to demonstrate the capacity of the region in terms of migratory species conservation to the participants from South-East Asia.

This event is part of a series of training workshops for Non-Parties, financed by the European Commission, in regions where CMS is underrepresented. The first one took place in Panama City end of September and addressed the region of Latin America. As their overarching goal objective is to expand the membership of the Convention for the benefit of migratory animals, the workshop follows two main objectives. On the one hand, CMS aims to obtain more concrete information on internal political structures and intentions in order to better assist in ratification processes and to advise on conservation action. On the other hand, it will be an opportunity to meet a group of potential new Parties in South-East Asia and demonstrate the benefits this highly specialized global convention could offer to the region.

This activity has been kindly sponsored by the European Commission through the Global Public Goods and Challenges (GPGC) Programme Cooperation Agreements with UNEP.
