Sing, Fly, Soar – Like a Bird!

“Sing, Fly, Soar – Like a Bird!” is the theme of this year’s World Migratory Bird Day, an annual global campaign dedicated to raising awareness of migratory birds and the need for international cooperation to conserve them. This year the campaign will focus on the phenomena of “bird song” and “bird flight” as a way to inspire and connect people of all ages around the world in their shared desire to celebrate migratory birds and to unite in a common, global effort to protect birds and the habitats they need to survive.

ACAP Proposes a World Albatross Day

At its Eleventh Meeting held in Brazil this May, the Advisory Committee of the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels identified an urgent and persistent conservation crisis for albatrosses and petrels. Thousands of albatrosses and petrels are continuing to die every year as a result of fisheries operations, notably by longline and trawl vessels. Considerable efforts by ACAP and other bodies have been put into researching and recommending effective mitigation measures to address seabird bycatch in fisheries. Nevertheless, in many instances these recommendations have not been fully implemented or have not been implemented at all.

New Executive Secretary for ACAP

Christine Bogle has just taken over the reins at the Secretariat of the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels, replacing Marco Favero. Christine, who is from New Zealand, used to be a diplomat, serving in Peru, Italy, Spain, Tonga and Mexico - the last three as Head of Mission. During her time with the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, she became interested in multilateral diplomacy, especially in the environmental field, which stands her in good stead for her new post.

Connectivity Conservation: a Key Element of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework

CMS and its Family set the course for developing their contributions to the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework which is expected to provide a "New Deal for Nature" for the entire international community. Two years away from its adoption, the post-2020 framework presents the opportunity to raise the visibility of migratory wildlife and promote its conservation. Last week, the CMS Standing Committee (Bonn, 23-24 October 2018) endorsed the establishment of a Working Group (WG) on the development of CMS Family contributions to the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

Side Event on Solutions to Bycatch and Entanglement in Ghost Gear held at FAO COFI33

On 12 July, during the 33rd Session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI33), held in Rome, management solutions for ghost gear, also known as abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG), and bycatch were discussed in a side event. FAO Member States Vanuatu, Samoa, Fiji, Palau, Belgium, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Panama served as hosts for the event organized in collaboration with FAO, the International Whaling Commission (IWC), World Animal Protection, WWF and CMS.

2018: A New World Migratory Bird Day

On 26 October 2017 on the sidelines of the CMS COP12 in Manila, Environment for the Americas (EFTA), the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) and the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA), announced an innovative partnership to boost awareness of the plight of migratory birds around the world. The new partnership formally unites two of the world’s largest bird education campaigns, International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) and World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) in a bid to strengthen recognition and appreciation of migratory birds and highlight the urgent need for their conservation.

Marine Debris – CMS/ASCOBANS Points out Some Local Solutions to a Global Problem

Marine debris – litter in our oceans – is a serious threat to wildlife making use of the oceans and beaches. Many animals, including marine mammals, turtles, birds and sharks get entangled in lost or discarded nets and lines or mistakenly ingest plastic bags and pieces of colourful plastic. Much suffering and death are the result.
