6th Meeting of the CMS Energy Task Force Agrees on Key Priorities

Bonn, 17 February 2022 - The CMS Energy Task Force (ETF) convened its 6th Meeting on 9 and 10 February. Over 60 participants, including representatives of CMS Parties, Multilateral Environmental Agreements, NGOs, International Financial Institutions, and entities working in the energy field met to discuss progress and priorities in implementing the ETF 2021-2024 workplan.

CMS Executive Secretary Amy Fraenkel said: “Global energy demand is set to increase 30% by 2040. Transitioning to a decarbonized economy should be a top priority, but this transition needs to take place without jeopardizing the future of migratory species, many of which are already suffering from inadequate planning and monitoring of current energy developments. The Energy Task Force provides guidance and technical standards for ensuring that renewable energy projects minimize impacts on migratory species.

This year´s ETF agenda focused on setting up workplan priorities with a specific focus on research and sub-regional needs. It also hosted a dedicated session with International Financial Institutions to analyze this sector´s needs and demands for selecting sustainable energy investments.

The ETF added several new members at this meeting.  Ms. Fraenkel added, “We are very happy to see increased engagement and leadership from its members.”

Mr. Michel Perret, from the Ministère de la Transition Écologique et Solidaire, France was re-elected as Chair of the ETF and Ms Lori Anna Conzo, International Finance Corporation, was elected as the ETF´s new vice-chair.
