2022/014: Decisions Related to Conservation Implications of Animal Culture and Social Complexity for Potential Action by Parties

To facilitate the ongoing work on the Conservation Implications of Animal Culture and Social Complexity, and in view of preparations for the 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CMS (COP14) to take place in 2023, the Secretariat wishes to highlight the following requests to Parties for potential action, as contained in Decision 13.102:

Parties are requested to:

a) liaise with the chair and vice-chair of the Expert Working Group on Animal Culture and Social Complexity regarding the development of concerted actions for species or populations identified as priorities;

b) submit to the Secretariat for transmission to the Expert Working Group on Animal Culture and Social Complexity information on any assessments of anthropogenic threats to socially complex mammalian species on the basis of evidence of interactions of those threats with social structure and culture, as well as any publications of pertinent data for advancing the conservation management of these populations and discrete social groups;

c) support the implementation of these Decisions with voluntary contributions.

Submissions in response to Decision 13.102 b) are requested by 31 October 2022.

The Chair of the Expert Working Group on Animal Culture, Dr. Philippa Brakes, stands ready to discuss any ideas for culture-related Concerted Actions to be proposed to COP14.
