Following the decision made at the 2nd Multi-Stakeholder Expert Meeting in Bogis-Bossey, Switzerland in May 2015 and following the notification circulated by the Executive Director of UNEP, Mr. Achim Steiner, on 19 June 2015 to all its member states through the Committee of Permanent Representatives and National Focal Points to UNEP, the CMS Secretariat is sending out this notification in order to ensure that the NBSAPs process is used to foster collaboration at the national level.
In addition, the CMS Secretariat would like to draw attention to CMS Resolution 10.18 on the “Guidelines on the integration of migratory species into national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) and other outcomes from CBD COP10), “which requested CMS national focal points to liaise with their CBD counterparts with a view to ensuring coordination in the implementation of both conventions and requested the CMS Secretariat to develop guidelines to integrate migratory species issues into NBSAPs and to continue to cooperate with CBD in the framework of a revised Joint Work Programme” and reminding the Parties to the Convention of the approaching deadline for achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Target 17, “By 2015 each Party has developed, adopted as a policy instrument, and has commenced implementing an effective, participatory and updated national biodiversity strategy and action plan.”
The CMS Secretariat invites its Focal Points to include the issues related to migratory species as a component in their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and, if still in the finalizing process of the post 2010-NBSAPs, encourages them to take action on integrating the issue of synergies among the Biodiversity-related Conventions before the deadline of the new generation of NBSAPs.
Support for action and implementation is provided on the NBSAPs Forum-website.
