Fifth International Marine Conservation Congress

Kuching, Malaysia, 29 June 2018- Dr Donna Kwan from the CMS Dugong MOU Secretariat attended the fifth International Marine Conservation Congress (IMCC) held from 24 – 29 June in Malaysia. The Society for Conservation Biology's IMCC brings together conservation experts and students to develop tools to further marine conservation policy.

The theme of the conference was “Making marine science matter". A number of workshops of relevance to the Dugong MOU were held during IMCC5, including a workshop by the Indo-Pacific Seagrass Network on Assessing the value of seagrass for supporting livelihoods and food supply across the Indo-Pacific: a focus on gleaning which was organised by Project Seagrass.

The GEF Dugong and Seagrass Conservation Projectorganised a workshop at IMCC5 titled “Integrating Cultural Values in Dugong Conservation”. During the workshop, Project Partners from Mozambique, Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, Malaysia and Madagascar gave presentations on the cultural values work they had done under the project. The workshop was facilitated by Mr Johan Van Der Ploeg from WorldFish. Dr Kwan sat on the panel for the session, along with Mr Len McKenzie from Seagrass-Watch, who also gave a presentation during the workshop.

On the final day of the conference, during the Oceans Online session, Mr Len McKenzie and Dr Richard Unsworth from the Dugong Technical Group ran a workshop on the Dugong and Seagrass Research Toolkit.
