World's Largest Bukhara Deer Population Needs Human Help

The Bukhara deer is a subspecies of the red deer that inhabits riparian forests along desert rivers in central Asia (Tugai forest) and is assessed by the IUCN as vulnerable. In total, there are less than four thousand individuals in the wild, inhabiting four countries. The largest population survives in Uzbekistan, with the largest grouping of the deer inhabiting the Lower Amu Darya Biosphere Reserve (NABR) in Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan.

Государственный заповедник «Чёрные земли» создан 11 июня 1990 г. с целью восстановления экологического равновесия на опустыненных территориях экорегиона «Черные земли» Прикаспийской низменности. В настоящее время, заповедник играет ключевую роль в сохранении популяции сайгака (Saiga tatarica tatarica) Северо-Западного Прикаспия, единственной популяции обитающей исключительно в границах Российской Федерации.

Importance of the Chernye Zemli State Reserve for the Conservation of the Northwest Pre-Caspian Saiga Population: History and Perspectives

The Chernye Zemli State Reserve was established on 11 June 1990 for the restoration of the ecological balance in the deserted areas of the Chernye Zemli ecological region of the Caspian lowlands. At present, the Reserve plays a key role in the conservation of the Northwest Pre-Caspian saiga population (Saiga tatarica tatarica), which is the only population inhabiting exclusively within the Russian borders.

The Current State of Saiga Antelopes in Kazakhstan

In Kazakhstan, the state census, inventory and monitoring of wild animals are conducted in order to effectively manage their conservation, reproduction and sustainable use as well as to conserve biodiversity and habitats. This data allows to enhance the strategy for the protection of wild animals, to redistribute the surveillance efforts to the regions with the largest populations of animals, and at the same time, to pay close attention to the places with the smallest populations with a purpose to restore their numbers as soon as possible.

Современное состояние сайгаков в Казахстане

Государственные учет, кадастр и мониторинг животного мира в Республике Казахстан ведутся для целей государственного управления охраной, воспроизводством и устойчивым использованием животного мира, а также сохранения биологического разнообразия и среды обитания животных. Данные учета позволяют скорректировать стратегию охраны животных, перераспределить усилия службы государственной охраны в регионы, с наибольшим скоплением животных, и в то же время, уделить особое внимание местам с наименьшим скоплением животных, с целью скорейшего восстановления их численности.

First Community-based Area for Saiga Conservation in Kazakhstan

The Saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica and S. borealis mongolica) is a migratory herbivore found in Kazakhstan, Mongolia, the Russian Federation and Uzbekistan. The saiga generally inhabits open dry steppe grasslands and semideserts. Saigas in the 1990s underwent a catastrophic fall (~95%) in numbers due to poaching, decreasing from more than 1.5 million to 50,000 individuals across its range. Most of Saiga tatarica is found in Kazakhstan (over 97%) with smaller numbers occurring in the Russian Federation and Uzbekistan, whereas Saiga borealis mongolica only occurs in Mongolia.
