Camelus bactrianus

Vilm, Germany (May 4, 2017)– Experts have for the first time mapped the distribution and movement corridors of migratory mammals in combination with threats from linear infrastructure, such as railways, roads, pipelines, and border fences, across the entire Central Asian region.

04 May 2017

Central Asian ecosystems, home to some of the most spectacular migrations of wild mammals in the world face increasing threats. Thirty experts active in Central Asia convened at the International Academy of Nature Conservation on Vilm Island in Germany to discuss how to advance their common goal of conserving Central Asian mammals and their habitats. The workshop was held on 22 to 26 August 2016 and focused on setting priorities for the implementation of the CMS Central Asian Mammals Initiative (CAMI).

The 7th mining forum "MINEX Central Asia – 2016" was hosted in the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana on 19-21 April 2016. For the first time the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), represented by Kazakhstan’s largest nature conservation NGO, the Association for the Conservation of the Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK), participated in a major event organized by the mining industry.

Description:

The wild or Bactrian camel (Camelus ferus) is a highly mobile and impressive animal that can cross up to 75 km a day and their range reaches 12,000 km². They usually have two humps used for storing the fat that can be converted for water and energy, when necessary. The wild camel is also known to be highly adaptive species; for example, in some areas in the absence of fresh water they adapted to drinking salt water slush that domestic camel will not touch. The habitat of the wild camel varies from rocky mountain massifs, to flat and extremely arid deserts, vast plains with sparse vegetation, stony desert plains, high sand dunes and poplar fringed oases. These habitats used by wild camels are characterized by the extreme weather conditions varying from +40C in the summer to -30C in the winter. To cope with these conditions, camels have a thick, shaggy coat that protects them in winter and falls away as the warmer season comes and temperatures rise.

The Bactrian camel is only found in three locations in northern China (one in the Taklamakan and two in the Lop Nur Desert) and one location in southern Monoglia (Transaltai Gobi). Partially the range of the one existing subpopulation is covered by the Lop Nur Wild Camel National Reserve in China and the Great Gobi Section A Strictly Protected Area in Mongolia. There are no reliable estimates available for the population of the wild camel. However, rough numbers suggest around 600 individuals surviving in China and 350 in Mongolia.

The key threats to the Bactrian camel include poaching, habitat loss, human disturbance and hybridization with domestic camels. The species is illegally hunted to minimize competition with domestic camels and livestock; it is also hunted for subsistence and recreational purposes. It is estimated by the Protected Area staff and Mongolian scientists that in Mongolia, 25 to 30 Wild Bactrian camels are being killed annually when they migrate across the international border into China on the southernmost boundary of the Great Gobi Reserve A. The expansion of livestock and human settlements is also likely to lead to habitat degradation. Mining, both legal and illegal, and industrial and infrastructure development may cause further deterioration and fragmentation of the wild camel’s habitats.

Conservation:

The wild camel is included in the CMS Appendix I and designated for concerted conservation actions by Resolution 11.13 of the COP11, calling for all the Range States to implement the provisions of the Convention to benefit the conservation of the selected species. The wild camel is also covered by the recently adopted Central Asian Mammals Initiative (CAMI) and its Programme of Work (POW). The key conservation efforts for the wild camel are associated with mitigating impacts from linear infrastructure and maintaining landscape permeability. In connection to this, an important CMS document - the Guidelines on Mitigating the Impact of Linear Infrastructure and Related Disturbance on Mammals in Central Asia provides tools for addressing this issue.  The IUCN Red List assessed this species as critically endangered.
