SEVENTH MEETING OF THE SIGNATORIES TO THE
MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING CONCERNING CONSERVATION MEASURES FOR THE SIBERIAN CRANE (Grus leucogeranus)

FACT SHEET

I. The CMS MoU Meeting

The Seventh Siberian Crane MoU Meeting will take place from 10-12 June 2010 at the headquarters of the UNEP/CMS Secretariat in Bonn, Germany. The objectives of the meeting will be to review progress made since the last meeting regarding the implementation of the Conservation Plans for the Western, Eastern and Central populations of the Siberian Crane and update the Conservation Plans for the next three-year period.

II. Meeting Venue

The Meeting will take place in Bonn at the UN Campus ‘Langer Eugen’ < See location on Map >.

The meeting room is located on the nineteenth floor (room 1916) and will be signposted.

How to get to the venue:

By tram (U-bahn):

From the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof) in the city centre: take tram 66 (direction Bad Honnef) or tram 63/16 (direction Bad Godesberg) to the “Heussallee” stop. The trip takes about 6 minutes.
From Bad Godesberg station (Bahnhof): take tram 63/16 (direction Hauptbahnhof) to the “Heussallee” stop. The trip takes about 10 minutes. < Trams 63 and 66 >, < Tram 16 >.

Upon arrival at Heussallee, exit the station and walk down Heussallee to Hermann Ehlers Strasse (toward the Rhine River) for about 5 minutes till you come to the UN Building (a tall multiple-storey building). The entrance is located about 100 meters down the road.

By bus:
From Bonn city centre (Hauptbahnhof) or Bad Godesberg city centre, take Bus 610 or 611 to a stop called “Deutsche Welle”. Walk down to the Hermann-Ehlers-Strasse (toward the Rhine river) for about 2 minutes till you come to the UN Building (a tall multiple-storey building). The entrance is located about 100 meters down the road from the intersection of Heussallee and Kurt-Schumacher-Strasse. < Bus 610 > < Bus 611 >.

Tram or Bus tickets can be obtained from ticket machines in the stations or in the bus or tram itself. If you are travelling in and around Bonn press the button 1b, one-way ticket (1 trip) costs 2.40 Euro and a multiple ticket (4 trips) costs 8.60 Euro.

By taxi: The fare for a taxi ride to Langer Eugen (Hermann Ehlers Strasse 10) from Bonn city centre (Hauptbahnhof-Main station) is around 13 Euro. From Bad Godesberg city center about 10 Euro. The central phone number for Bonn taxis is 555 555.

III. Registration / Opening

The MoU Meeting will be opened at 9.00 on 10 June 2010. Delegates are requested to arrive at 08.30 for registration and to pick up any meeting materials.

IV. Identification badges

All delegates will receive an identification badge. You are requested to wear this badge during all official functions to gain access to the venue.

V. Working language of the meeting

The working language of the meeting is English, however, informal translation in Russian will also be provided throughout the meeting as needed.

VI. Documents

Documents will be distributed before the meeting in English via the CMS website < http://www.cms.int/species/siberian_crane/sib_7th_meeting.htm >. There will be no paper copies.

Delegates are responsible for downloading and printing documents from the website. Organizer will provide participants only documents such as agenda and list of participants or limited number of other documents upon request.

VII. Hotel accommodation

1. Hotel information for funded delegates:

UNEP/CMS and ICF have already blocked and paid hotel rooms for funded delegates of UNEP/CMS and ICF. ICF will inform funded delegates at the beginning of May 2010 about the hotel, that they will be allocated.

2. Hotel information for non-funded delegates:

For non-funded delegates, space blocking has been made by UNEP/CMS in three affordable hotels in Bonn in order to give delegates the opportunity to book reasonably cheap space. Please note that at the same time United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is holding a meeting in Bonn and therefore available room space in Bonn is already very scarce. It is recommendable for non-funded delegates to orientate themselves AS SOON AS POSSIBLE regarding their hotel accommodation and to secure appropriate space well before the UNEP/CMS blocked space will be dissolved.

UNEP/CMS has blocked single rooms, which would need to be booked by non-funded delegates latest by 07 May 2010 to secure the blocked space. On 08.05.2010 the hotels will dissolve the space, which has not been secured by credit card or other ways of individual booking.

How the meeting venue can be reached from the hotel:

Walk from the hotel to the bus stop “Hauptbahnhof” (central station). Take the bus 610 / 611 and drop off at bus stop “Deutsche Welle”. The bus stop is close to the UN building “Langer Eugen”. Estimated total travel time: around 30 minutes. Please reconfirm details of the bus schedule with the reception of the hotel.

From the central station it is also possible to reach the meeting venue by tram (U-Bahn) (see section “How to get to the venue” on page 1).

By public transport: Take the tram 61 or 62 from the stop “Eduard-Otto-Strasse” in the direction of Bonn Sued/ Oberkassel and get off at “Hauptbahnhof” (central station) (Sixth stop). Then take the bus 610 / 611 and get off at bus stop “Deutsche Welle”. The bus stop is close to the UN building “Langer Eugen”. Estimated total travel time: around 35 minutes. Please reconfirm details of the tram schedule at the hotel reception.

How the meeting venue can be reached from the hotel:

Take a walk from the hotel to the tram stop “Universitaet/Markt”. Take the tram 66 in the direction “Koenigswinter” or 63 in the direction of “Bad Godesberg” and get off at the stop “Heussallee/Museumsmeile”. Take the street “Heussallee” and walk about 5 minutes straight on until you reach the UN building “Langer Eugen” which will be located straight ahead. Estimated total travel time: around 20 minutes. VIII. Visas

IX. Organizers of the meeting

The Secretariat of the Bonn Convention is responsible for the logistics of the meeting and is responsible for circulation of official invitations to the participants.

X. Transport

Bonn is well connected to the rail network with a main line central train station (Hauptbahnhof). It is located approximately twenty minutes journey time south of Cologne and two hours north-west of Frankfurt/Main. There is an international airport serving Cologne/Bonn. The taxi fare from the airport to the city centre is approximately € 45, but there is also a bus service (SB 60) Terminal 1 bus stop to the city centre (opposite the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof)) costing about 6.50 €.

Delegates arriving at Frankfurt International Airport may wish to take the train to Bonn. There is high-speed train service (ICE) between the airport and Cologne. Travel time is approximately 40 minutes a ticket costs round about €56.00. Departure is from the long-distance train station (Fernbahnhof) in the airport complex. The direction is Cologne. The station stop for Bonn is the town of Siegburg. Taxis are available for approximately 30 € from Siegburg to Bonn. One can also catch tram 66 to Bonn (ticket price 4.30 €, please press 3 on the ticket machine).

Normal train service between Frankfurt International Airport and Bonn is also available (from the long-distance train station (Fernbahnhof) in the airport). Travel time is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. This trip along the Rhine River is one of the most scenic train trips in Germany and brings you directly into the city centre of Bonn a ticket costs round about 38.00 €.

From Düsseldorf Airport to Bonn there are direct trains, which runs hourly and has a travel time of about 66 minutes and a ticket costs round about 30.00 €.

XI. Weather

Bonn in June has normally long spells of sunshine, temperatures regularly top 20°C / 68°F, rising to more than 25°C / 77°F at times. However, do not forget to bring your raincoat, umbrella and a light jacket or pullover since weather in Northern Europe is at best unpredictable and it can be cool and wet.

XII. Currency

Germany’s currency is the Euro (€). As on 1 March 2010 the exchange rate was 0.74 € for 1 US$. Credit cards are accepted in hotels and in most restaurants in Bonn, but not in many shops.
