Launch of the Pacific Cetaceans MoU Diversity Database

Risso's dolphin© S Airoldi TethysBonn, 9 August 2011 - the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society has launched the “Diversity Database for the Pacific Cetaceans MoU” - an excellent initiative applauded by the Secretariat. Now fully online, ready with over 400 records, many of which link through to Google mapping, the multi-lingual tool makes Country/Territory and species specific information freely and easily available to all Pacific Islands Governments.

It includes tracking information on habitat type, behaviour during the sighting, numbers of animals per sighting, and any related threats if the sighting is of a stranding incident.

Samoa Research Project Contributes to the Pacific Cetaceans MoU Work

© Juney Ward/WDCSBonn, 14 July 2011 - The first dedicated cetacean research survey in Samoan waters was carried out in March and April 2011 with the support of the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS). Information on site fidelity, behaviour and habitat use of Spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) along the north-western coast of Savaii Island was gathered and analysed in order to support Samoa with its national conservation activities, including the measures recommended in the Whale and Dolphin Action Plan of the Memorandum of Understanding for the Conservation of Cetaceans and Their Habitats in the Pacific Islands Region (Pacific Cetaceans MoU).

Technical Advisory Group for Pacific Islands Cetaceans MOU starts work

May 25, 2011 - The Secretariat welcomes the recent establishment of the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for the CMS Pacific Cetacean MoU. The TAG is designed to assist signatories with all scientific issues relating to cetacean conservation in the region. This will include the review of CMS-related documents and requirements such as editing and updating the species’ record. Initial tasks for the TAG will include the preparation of a summary of cetacean information on behalf of the signatories to submit at the COP10. The TAG is comprised of nine experts, who were nominated by the MoU signatories. Details of the TAG members can be found here.


Fiji Humpback Research Project a huge success in the Pacific Islands Region

The 1st year for a new cetacean research project in Fiji is now completed. The project is collaboration between the Fiji Government Fisheries Department, WWF, the University of the South Pacific and WDCS International and is a significant contribution to the Pacific Cetaceans MoU.
