First-ever satellite tracking activity for Bangladesh

The first-ever sea turtle tracking project in Bangladesh has been initiated by Marinelife Alliance.  An Olive ridley turtle – named “Urmee”, which means “wave” in Bangla – was fitted with a Platform Terminal Transmitter (PTT) and released into the Bay of Bengal from Sonadia Island during the evening of 29 March 2010.  The transmitter was installed during the post-nesting period to minimize potential interactions with fishing fleets and to reduce the risk of the turtle being trapped in fishing nets. More »

FROM THE SECRETARIAT

We’re way behind in getting the e-News out this month, thanks in part to recent mission commitments and a most unexpected and untimely problem with part of the IOSEA website, which we are managing to get on top of. Our soon-to-be former internet service provider tried unsuccessfully, for its own reasons, to migrate the Online Reporting System to a new server – and we have been dealing with the repurcussions ever since. Hopefully everything will be sorted out in the next week or so.

There are a couple of interesting Features in the pipeline, but they might have to wait until next month, because a couple of weeks of “R & R” happen to be the next item on the agenda.

In the meanwhile, we hope you enjoy the Profile of the Month on the recent Sea Turtle Symposium in Goa which, in the opinion of this writer, was one of the most interesting in recent years.
