Plan linked to the CMS
Memorandum of Understanding on Marine Turtles of the Atlantic Coast of
Africa
Nairobi,
9 May 2002. Official representatives and experts from countries along
the Atlantic coast of Africa have agreed the contents of a Conservation
Plan for marine turtles, linked to the CMS Memorandum of Understanding
that was adopted in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire in May 1999. The meeting, which
was held at UNEP Headquarters, was chaired by the Nigerian Minister of
State for Environment, H.E. Dr. Imeh Okopido (pictured left, with the
Deputy ExecutiveSecretary, Douglas Hykle). Representatives of five countries
(Angola, Morocco, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal and Sierra Leone) added
their signatures to those of 12 other Signatory States. The Nairobi Declaration
sets the stage for further concerted implementation of the Memorandum
