New turtle nesting drive launched

20 May 2012 – TThe new turtle nesting season
in Masirah Island has been inaugurated with a campaign to
make the public, notably the young generation, aware of
the need to protect these sea creatures. Masirah is considered
to be the largest nesting area for Loggerhead turtles in
the world.

the Paris Sorbonne University Career Forum

Abu Dhabi was invited to participate in the Paris Sorbonne
University - Abu Dhabi (PSUAD) Astrolabe Annual Career Forum.
The Office exhibited alongside approximately 40 other international
organizations, including for example the International Renewable
Energy Agency (IRENA).
The Paris Sorbonne University - Abu Dhabi
(PSUAD) was established in 2006 following an international
agreement between the French university Paris Sorbonne and
the Government of Abu Dhabi under the patronage of H.H.

EAD to Collect Detailed Inventory
of Abu Dhabi Emirate’s Terrestrial Biodiversity

– In order to update previous information collected
and to have a more detailed and comprehensive inventory
of the Emirate’s terrestrial biodiversity and ecosystems,
the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has embarked
on research that will begin in the Western Region of Abu
Dhabi Emirate and eventually cover the entire Emirate of
Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi’s conservation
efforts come in for praise

– Environmental experts estimate that one in seven
species of birds, one in four mammal species and one in
three amphibian species in the world are facing extinction
now. Quite a few such species are in the UAE such as the
Socotran cormorant, the Arabian tahr, the Arabian oryx,
the Arabian leopard, dugongs and the Hawksbill turtle, as
well as many other types of reptiles, fishes, amphibians
and invertebrates.

EAD’s ongoing commitment
to support the UNEP/CMS Office in Abu Dhabi
Bergen,
Norway, 22 November 2011 - At the CMS 10th Conference
of the Parties Donor’s reception funded by the Government
of Germany, the host country to the CMS Secretariat, the
Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) announced on behalf
of the Government the United Arab Emirates its most generous
support, which highlighted the funding commitments towards
the Convention.
In support of the two memoranda of understanding (Dugongs
and Raptors), the UAE Government has announced US $4 million
for the triennium of 2012-2014. These funds will continue
to support cooperation with UNEP/CMS Family through hosting
and funding the UNEP/CMS Office - Abu Dhabi which includes
actions that implement the two MOUs. The Donor Agreement
between EAD and UNEP will be signed on 13 December 2011,
during the Eye on Earth Summit, co-organized by UNEP and
EAD, in Abu Dhabi.

Welcome to Nick P Williams as
Programme Officer (Raptors - Birds of Prey)
Abu
Dhabi, 2 November 2011 - The Interim Coordinating
Unit for the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Conservation
of Migratory Birds of Prey in Africa and Eurasia welcomed
a new Programme Officer this week as Mr Nick P. Williams
joined the UNEP/CMS Office in Abu Dhabi.
Nick has held a lifelong interest in birds,
particularly raptors. Whilst still at school, he began voluntary
fieldwork with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds
(RSPB) and other non-governmental conservation organizations.
He has travelled extensively to study raptors in over 50
countries and has gained practical field experience of a
wide range of species. Nick is a qualified bird ringer and
has published a range of scientific research papers, mostly
related to birds.

Call for Expressions of Interest
to host SS2 of Dugong MOU
Abu Dhabi, 4 October 2011
- The Secretariat to the UNEP/CMS Dugong MOU is seeking
Expressions of Interest (EOI) from Signatories, Dugong MOU
range states and partners, to host the Second Signatory
State Meeting (SS2) of the Memorandum of Understanding on
the Conservation and Management of Dugongs and their Habitats
throughout their Range. The meeting is scheduled for the
third trimester of 2012.
The EOI should give a brief overview of
the estimated timeline, possible location and venue, and
indication of cost. Deadline for submitting EOIs to cmsoffice.ae@cms.int
is 21 November 2011. The Secretariat will announce the successful
host country bid late January 2012.

101 Hawksbill Turtles Freed into
Sea

Rehabilitation Project (DTRP), yesterday, successfully returned
101 critically endangered hawksbill turtles back to their
natural habitat following several months of rehabilitation

Abu Dhabi announce the signing of a new Framework Agreement
Abu Dhabi, 17 June 2011
- The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)
and the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) signed on Wednesday
(15 June 2011) a four-year Framework Agreement in support
of the IUCN Programme as well as a Memorandum of Understanding
to support the implementation of the Strategic Plan of IUCN's
Species Survival Commission. A signing ceremony took place
at IUCN Headquarters in Switzerland between Razan Khalifa
Al Mubarak, Secretary General of EAD and Julia Marton-Lefevre,
Director General of IUCN. The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi
joins Canada, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Norway,
Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the MAVA Foundation who,
as Framework Partners, support IUCN's 2009-2012 Programme,
Shaping a Sustainable Future, with multi-year core funding.

Students Call for New Attitude on
Subject of Environment

– Katika Chopra believes that if humanity does not
take environmental conservation seriously, it risks health
problems on an unprecedented scale. "Climate change
is a real concern today and the planet's resources are depleting
at an alarming rate. This is why we all need to work together
to protect the environment," the 17-year-old student
from India told Gulf News. The two students were among young
activists at the ‘Our Tomorrow’ event held at
Abu Dhabi Indian High School with the objective of raising

Bu Tinah Island a Haven for Endangered
Animals and Birds

– The rangers policing the waters around Bu Tinah
Island can seek the help of the UAE Coast Guard to stop
fishing boats or tourist boats encroaching into the restricted
area. "But we never had such a situation in recent
years, thanks to the increasing awareness in the community

island," the rangers told Gulf News during a first
media tour to the island on Wednesday.

CMS Thesis Award
Bonn, 28 January 2011
– The closing date for entries to the UNEP/CMS Thesis
Award on Migratory Species Conservation, sponsored by Lufthansa,
is 15 April 2011. The award of €10,000 (c. US$ 13,500)
will be made at the 10th Meeting of the Conference of Parties
to CMS (COP10) in Norway in November 2011, in affiliation
with the Zoologisches Forschungsmuseum Alexander Koenig
(ZFMK) in Bonn. The Secretariat of the Bonn Convention on
Migratory Species advertises this award to promote scientific
research and conservation of migratory species, as defined
by the Convention.

UN Secretary-General Visits Abu
Dhabi
Abu Dhabi, 18 January 2011
– United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon,
visited Abu Dhabi and met with the UN Country Team, composed
of heads of UN agencies in the UAE, to receive briefings
on the agencies and on important current matters.
After the UNCT meeting Mr. Ban attended
UN Staff Townhall meeting at the Emirates Palace to address
a group of UAE colleagues. The Secretary-General spoke about
the current strategic priorities of the UN and inspired
staff to work with full sense of mission and responsibility.
Present at the Townhall meeting panel were also Mr. Oscar
Fernandez-Taranco, Assistant Secretary-General for Political
Affairs; Dr. Kandeh K. Yumkella, Director-General of UN
Industrial Development Organization; and Dr. Elissar Sarrouh,
UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative
to the UAE. In addition to these and many other meetings,
Mr. Ban Ki-moon was a keynote speaker at the 4th World Future
Energy Summit opening ceremony in Abu Dhabi on Monday 17
January.
Abu Dhabi Unveils Online Coastal

atlas is the first comprehensive resource of its kind in

Pupils visit UNEP/CMS and EAD
Abu
Dhabi, 6 May 2010 –The UNEP/CMS Office and
Environment Agency in Abu Dhabi (EAD) received visitors
from the Dubai International Academy (DIC). The sixth graders
of the DIC were organizing an exhibition entitled ‘What
Matters to Me’ and the expedition of this group of
students was about obtaining more information about dugongs
in general and dugong work in the region. Together with
their mentor, the young pupils showed a great interest as
well as knowledge concerning dugongs. They enjoyed a dugong
presentation and a short film, after which Dr. Himansu S.
Das, Associate Scientist from the EAD, and UNEP/CMS Dugong
Programme Officer Dr. Donna Kwan, were questioned about
dugongs and their jobs.
The UNEP/CMS Office visited the ‘What Matters to
Me’ exhibition in Dubai International Academy on 11
May, where the group of students presented dugongs as their
focus. UNEP/CMS Office is looking forward to more of such
awareness raising projects.

Talk about Dugongs
Abu Dhabi, 23 December 2009 – UNEP/CMS
Abu Dhabi Office and the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi
(EAD) met for the first time on 23rd December, 2009. Being
located in the same building as EAD, the Secretariat will
be working closely with the agency to tackle major threats
