The UNEP/CMS Office in Abu Dhabi is co-located with
Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi. This will help facilitate
the effective implementation of the provisions of
the agreements relevant to dugongs and birds of prey
across their ranges. The Office will also support
regional programmes for marine turtle conservation
in Western Asia sub-region in coordination with the
IOSEA
Turtle MoU and with other relevant conservation
initiatives. The Office represents a major collaboration
between UNEP and the United Arab Emirates to conserve
migratory species for the benefit of present and future
generations. A PDF version of a brochure describing
the work of the Abu Dhabi office can be found here.
As a CMS coordinating tool in the
region, the Office supports Signatory States by providing
technical assistance and sponsoring to projects dealing
with conservation and management of dugongs or birds
of prey according to the relevant Conservation and
Management Plans of Action. To date, the Office has
sponsored projects assessing identifying relative
dugong abundances, key habitats and threats; formulating
standardized methods in helping to identify important
dugong areas; proposals for regional dugong priority
actions and marine turtle action plan; and exploration
of the shared conservation synergies between dugongs
and marine turtles. The Office has also launched a
broad communication with Birds of Prey MoU Signatories
and Partners in order to facilitate National Strategies
and relevant documents establishment. Several Signatories
reported on their plans to promptly undertake such
an exercise in preparation of the First Signatory
State Meeting. Small grant programmes are under way
of implementation by the Office and some African Signatories
of the Birds of Prey MoU. Amongst a series of projects,
an Action Plan for the conservation of two African
and Eurasian migratory species of falcon in Madagascar
is the first example.
In October 2010, the UNEP/CMS Abu
Dhabi Office organized the First Official Signatory
State Meeting of the Dugong MoU in Abu Dhabi. The
Second Meeting takes place in Manila, Philippines
19-20 February 2013. More information on the meeting
can be found through here.
At present, the UNEP/CMS Office in Abu Dhabi has
a staff of five members
and is located in Al Mamoura Building A, Level
1, in Muroor Road (Street no. 4).
