Bonn,
17 January 2011 - Wings over Wetlands (WOW), the
largest flyway conservation project of its kind ever undertaken
in the African-Eurasian region has come to a successful
conclusion.
The project, funded
through the Global Environment Facility (GEF),
was implemented over the period 2006-10 by a
consortium including the African-Eurasian Migratory
Waterbird Agreement (AEWA), the largest Agreement
so far concluded under the auspices of CMS.
The other partners included Wetlands International,
BirdLife International, the German Federal Agency
for Nature Conservation (BfN), the Ramsar Convention
on Wetlands, UNOPS, UNEP World Conservation
and Monitoring Centre (UNEP/WCMC) and a range
of other donors and local partners along the
African-Eurasian Flyway.
Enduring products of the project
will be the Flyways
Training Kit and the Critical
Sites Network Tool, but in
the opinion of Gerard Boere, the Chair of the Steering Committee,
WOW’s greatest success has in all probability been
the high level of cooperation and partnership in its multi-institutional
and international team working at all levels of the project
and across Africa and Eurasia.
