Washington DC/Bonn 13 August 2008
- The Convention’s office in Washington today published
a two-page factsheet on our work, designed to highlight
the relevance of CMS in the US context.
The fact sheet was prepared by the Convention’s
first regional representative in North America, Elaine
Yu, who is leaving to join graduate school at Yale. During
July 2008, Elaine was able to welcome her successor, Viviana
M. Jimenez
On 16 July, Elaine and Viviana jointly led a successful
information session on the Convention’s work for
staff members of the staff of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service. CMS remains indebted to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service for their generosity in proving our office facilities
in Washington.
Commenting on the staff changes and the new publication,
the Executive Secretary of UNEP/CMS, Robert Hepworth said
today:
“ Elaine has done a remarkable job for us this
year in initiating our office in Washington, building
a partnership with the UNEP Regional Office in Washington,
communicating the Convention’s aims to a widening
circle of audiences, and also finding time to complete
two partnerships with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) and the Alliance of Marine Mammal
Parks and Aquariums (AMMPA). Although she was only able
to stay with us for a few months, her pioneer role here
will not be forgotten.
“ At the same time we are fortunate to be able
to welcome Viviana Jimenez, a gifted communicator in English
and Spanish whom we are confident will build on Elaine’s
foundation, connecting us more closely with Government
bodies at both federal and state level, at a time of change
and opportunity for the Convention and international wildlife
conservation. She is bilingual and we will be seeking
her assistance with some of our initiatives in Latin America.
Her interests in marine conservation will also be a considerable
asset to us.”
Amy Fraenkel, Director of the UNEP Regional Office for
North America, who is based in Washington, added “UNEP's
Regional Office for North America is pleased to have such
an excellent, cooperative relationship with the CMS Secretariat,
and looks forward to working with the newly established
Washington office."
