Hanover
– 2 February 2007 From the Alps to the Sea and its
living treasures of the blue planet: CMS attends the fair
at the invitation by TUI AG, which is a founding partner
of the Year of the Dolphin campaign and a member of ‘Friends
of CMS’. 300 exhibitors from Germany, tour organizers,
National Parks, NGOs and UNESCO projects give background
information on dream destinations, principles and practice
of sustainable travel. Prof. Dr. Klaus Töpfer, former
2006 Executive Director of the United Nations Environmental
Programme and Chair of the Friends of CMS association
is the patron of the fair.
In its publication on “Wildlife Watching and Tourism”
CMS has developed a concept of sustainable use and wildlife
watching as an important contribution to conserve migratory
animals. Whale and dolphin watching tours are a prominent
example of sustainable tourism during the Year of the
Dolphin. Tour operators, government representatives and
researchers have agreed on a Voluntary Code of Conduct.
Until more detailed monitoring studies on the effects
of whale watching have been completed. “Whale and
dolphins are key actors in major tourist destinations.
However, they must not be harassed or chased. A respectful
approach towards these impressive animals in their natural
environment makes whale-watching a truly unforgettable
experience. Thus travelers and local communities can improve
their livelihoods while helping to conserve these marine
animals”, says CMS Executive Secretary Robert Hepworth.
Dolphins are exposed to an increasing variety of threats.
During the Year of the Dolphin 2007, UNEP, CMS and its
whale and dolphin agreements ACCOBAMS and ASCOBANS, UNESCO,
the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society and TUI join
forces to inform the great public on dolphins and their
needs to survive in the world’s rivers and seas.
CMS invites you to dive into the fascinating world of
dolphins and join the campaign to preserve the artists
of the sea.
CMS and TUI will give visitors to the international fair
the opportunity to attend a lecture on the Year of the
Dolphin campaign on Friday 2 February 2006 at
15.00hrs. We are looking forward to welcoming
you.
