Hanover,
3 February. For the first time CMS participates as
an exhibitor at the Reisepavilion 2006 - The International
Fair for Alternative Travel, to be held 3-5 February.
CMS shares a stand with TUI AG and EUROPARC Federation at
the invitation of TUI, which is a member of ‘Friends
of CMS’. ‘Friends of CMS’ is an association
of German representatives of the business and scientific communities,
NGOs and politics.
The theme of the 16th Reisepavilion is ‘Holidays
with Nature’. The Reisepavilion provides a unique
forum for CMS and its partner TUI to present current and
future joint projects such as the publication on scientific
research wildlife watching that will be launched at the
CBD Conference of the Parties in Brazil in March. Migratory
animals attract tourists because they are charismatic. CMS
takes into account the crucial role of sustainable tourism
development linked to migratory species conservation. “Wildlife
and its habitats are important components of biodiversity
that are increasingly threatened by human activities. Sustainable
use and wildlife watching can contribute to improving the
livelihoods of local communities thus enabling the long
term conservation of migratory animals”, said CMS
Executive Secretary Robert Hepworth.
Frequently animals and their habitats are located in major
tourist destinations. CMS Organizations play an active role
in promoting sustainable development in these regions. The
Year of the Turtle 2006 to be launched by the Indian Ocean
Marine Turtles MoU (IOSEA) and the Year of the Dolphin 2007
will be promoted by the Agreement on the Conservation of
Cetaceans of the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Contiguous
Atlantic Area (ACCOBAMS). The planned activities will raise
awareness on key issues and inform a wider audience on the
needs of marine turtles and dolphins. Their ecosystems are
fragile and must be preserved. The Great Apes Survival Project
(GRASP), a prominent partner of CMS, is another example
of successfully promoting wildlife watching to the benefit
of the local economy and animals alike. The cooperation
with TUI will enable CMS to transmit its message to a target
audience of tourist operators and tourist.
CMS and TUI will give visitors to the international fair
the opportunity to attend a lecture on the convention on
Sunday 5th February 2006 at 15.00hrs. We
are looking forward to welcoming you.
