Gland,
15 September 2006: A coordination exercise to share
information and identify opportunities for cooperation amongst
UN agencies and other international organizations on their
activities for the achieving the 2010 target was held this
Friday in Gland, at the IUCN Headquarters.
Mr. Robert Hepworth stressed that the 2010 target has been
the underpin of the Convention's work for the last two years.
CMS is a strong supporter of the "Countdown 2010" initiative
led by IUCN and the European Commission, and hopes that
it can be rallied out worldwide. The Executive Secretary
also recalled that the last CMS COP in November 2005 was
held under the banner "on the move to 2010". Indeed, the
whole of the CMS programme approved by the Parties aims
to meet the 2010 target for migratory species, strongly
promoting the work of the Convention as an important contribution
towards achieving the target. New partnerships created under
the aegis of CMS, with NGO partners, IGOs and the private
sector have enhanced the work on practical initiatives and
projects for the advancement of the programme of work, including
outreach initiatives. CMS activities and initiatives for
2010 were portrayed in a flowchart distributed to all participants
