The
28th Meeting of the Standing Committee was held on 21 and
22 April 2005 at the seat of the Ministry of Environment of
Germany in Bonn. Germany, as the depositary of the Secretariat,
Parties to the Convention, the regional Agreements, the chair
of the CMS Scientific Council as well as NGOs and observers
were represented at the meeting. Mr. Eric Blencowe, Head of
Zoos and International Conservation at the Department for
the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) chaired the
meeting.
On
the outset, the Secretariat provided the audience with a
comprehensive report on CMS activities and initiatives.
The implementation of the Strategic Plan for the next five
years (2006-2011), the 2010 biodiversity target, the status
of the budget for the current triennium and the upcoming
eighth meeting of the Conference of the Parties, to be held
in Nairobi in November 2005, were the main items on the
agenda. For the first time also a report on current fundraising
activities within the frame of a comprehensive strategy
was delivered to the meeting of the Standing Committee.
The Secretariat also reported on CMS projects, in particular
on the Sahelo-Saharan Antelope Project. In addition, a report
of the Scientific Council informed in detail on comprehensive
conservation activities.
