Bonn,
16 June 2005. On the occasion of the 10th Anniversary
of the African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) the staff
of CMS and its other Bonn based Agreements convened at the
AEWA Secretariat to celebrate "AEWA's 10th Birthday".
During the event, both Mr. Bert Lenten, the Executive Secretary
of AEWA and Mr. Robert Hepwoth, the Executive Secretary of
CMS recalled some of the historic moments and achievements
of the Agreement in the 10 years since it was concluded in
The Hague on the 16th of June 1995.
Although the Agreement only entered into force on 1st of November
1999, The African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement has become
one of the most comprehensive Agreements concluded under the
aegis of CMS so far:
Today, AEWA covers 235 species of birds, including (among
several others) many species of divers, flamingos, ducks,
cranes, waders, gulls and terns. The geographic area of the
Agreement covers 117 countries from Europe, parts of Asia
and Canada, the Middle East and Africa. Of these 117 Range
States currently 49 countries have become a Contracting Party
to AEWA and are actively contributing to the implementation
of the AEWA
Action Plan.
AEWA has become an important "flagship" Agreement
for CMS, in its ongoing effort to provide for coordinated
and concerted action towards the conservation and sustainable
management of migratory waterbirds throughout their migratory
system.
While the informal "birthday celebration" with the
"CMS Family" at the AEWA Secretariat on the exact
date of the Anniversary - had its very own symbolic highlights
(see picture above), it was just one in a series of events
and activities taking place to celebrate the 10th Anniversary
of the African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement throughout this
year. Please
visit the AEWA website to read more about the
10th Anniversary activities of AEWA.
