The
Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) and its Agreements ASCOBANS
and ACCOBAMS
recognize cetacean conservation as a priority for the achievement
of the 2010 target of reducing the loss of biodiversity at
the global scale. To achieve this target CMS and its specialized
Agreements are implementing a number of projects, initiatives
and resolutions in close collaboration with related organizations
and conventions. To this end, a Memorandum of Understanding
between CMS and International Whaling Commission (IWC)
is in place.
The IWC has recently established a Conservation Committee
and is currently developing its work programme. CMS and
its Agreements follow with interest the recent developments
and consider the Committee to be an additional tool for
promoting cetacean conservation. CMS, ASCOBANS and ACCOBAMS
look forward to a fruitful cooperation with the IWC Conservation
Committee on cetacean conservation on a global scale.
On the occasion of the IWC annual meeting CMS, ASCOBANS
and ACCOBAMS will deliver a statement on possible synergies
to the general assembly to be held 20-24 June. The annual
meeting opened earlier in the south-eastern coastal city
of Ulsan, Korea, 27 May.
