In
accordance with recommendation 7.8 of the Seventh Conference
of the Parties to CMS, the Secretariat launched a process
for the evaluation of the Global Register of Migratory Species
(GROMS).
In this context, an independent consultant (Dr.Chedly Rais)
was hired to facilitate the evaluation process in order
to assess:
- the suitability of GROMS to respond
to the information needs of CMS and its associated Agreements
(Parties, Secretariats, NGOs etc.)
- the accuracy and comprehensivenes
of the information currently available in GROMS
- the complementarity and possible
overlap of GROMS with other relevant databases and information
systems developed by other organisations, with special
focus on the web-based and freely available ones.
- the user-friendliness of the web and CD versions of
GROMS
The evaluation process should also investigate
options for the future of GROMS and provide an estimate
concerning the amounts of resources needed to maintain and
possibly further develop it. The evaluation will be conducted
through a wide consultation process involving key organisations,
institutions and experts. To this end, a consultation group
is being established to provide guidance to the consultant
and the Secretariat in the review process.
Contributions,
comments and suggestions on the GROMS and the evaluation
process are welcome.

of facilitating the evaluation can be contacted at the following
