The
UNEP/CMS Secretariat is pleased to announce the launch of
a new and expanded map
of CMS Parties on the Convention's website. The
new "clickable" CMS Party Map shows the global coverage
of the Convention organized by Biogeographic Regions. Each
detailed map allows a closer look at regions, highlighting
both countries that are already CMS Parties and those that
have signed the Convention. Furthermore, the new map also
includes countries that are a Party to one or more of the
Agreements under the auspices of CMS or that are Signatories
to one or more Memoranda of Understanding.
The geographical rendering used in these maps follows the
approach of Pielou (1979) and has also been adopted by the
World Wide Fund for Nature. His work divided the earth's terrestrial
surface into 8 biogeographic regions, based on differences
in geologic and climatic history, containing distinct assemblages
of plants and animals. WWF slightly adjusted the boundaries
drawn in the original publication, allowing for more recent
scientific findings. Within these Biogeographic Realms, biome
types can be identified, allowing for a more systematic approach
in the selection of protected areas. (for more information

were created, i.e. Central America and Europe, even though
these regions do not constitute biogeographic units in themselves
but are part of the Neotropical and Palearctic Realm, respectively. |
