25 years of Bonn Convention

On 23 June 2004 the Bonn Convention concluded under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme will celebrate its 25th Anniversary. The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) aims to conserve and manage avian, marine and terrestrial migratory species as well as their habitats throughout their range.

Countless animal species migrate. Some of them do not get very far. They swim, fly or travel long distances and they cross borders without a passport. They are hunted or they perish as a result of by catch in the nets of fishermen. Their habitats are being destroyed. However, there is hope and progress in the worldwide conservation of migratory species. The Bonn Convention stands for the worldwide protection of these species. CMS plays a major role in the conservation of migratory species and their habitats on a global scale. Nature conservationists in 86 member states know the logo with the pelican and the seal.

The 25th Anniversary of CMS is an excellent opportunity to analyse what has been achieved until now, and how the Convention might operate in future. Cooperation with other organizations and initiatives from all over the world improve the conservation status of migratory species. At a workshop to be held in Berlin 22 and 23 June scientists, practitioners and politicians will learn and discuss how their conservation goals and policies could be harmonised towards "best practise" schemes. “Migratory Species linking Ecosystems and Disciplines” is the topic of the workshop dealing with ecological, political and interdisciplinary issues. Interested parties are invited to attend public lectures. Workshop results will be communicated to the public during round tables and a press conference.

On the occasion of the 25th Anniversary the Museum Keonig in Bonn will organize a series of events. The topic of the public panel discussion in the Museum 22 June at 19.00 hrs is “Crossing Frontiers” – threats to and protection of migratory species of wild animals: 25 years Bonn Convention (CMS). In addition, activities from 22 to 26 June will focus on migratory animals: migratory fish, whales, birds, bats and African animals. In Potsdam 250 children will present the topic “Nature without frontiers”, a programme organized by the Federal Ministry for the Environment and NABU.

CMS invites you to participate in our 25th Anniversary programme for which you can find more detailed information below.

SECRETARY-GENERAL
--
MESSAGE ON THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY
OF THE CONVENTION ON MIGRATORY SPECIES
23 June 2004

Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations

Humans have long marvelled at migratory creatures – whether the sight of great flocks and herds on the move, or wonder at the movement itself. But migratory species are not only something spectacular to behold from afar; they are an integral part of the web of life on earth. They are essential for healthy ecosystems, contributing to their structure and function and connecting one to another. [read on]
