During
its lifetime a Grey whale in the east Pacific swims the
distance from the Earth to the moon and back while it migrates
between its tropical breeding grounds and feeding grounds
in the arctic. Many cetacean species are highly migratory
facing a wide range of threats during their annual globetrotting.
In celebration of its 25th Anniversary
the Bonn Convention together with WDCS, the Whale
and Dolphin Conservation Society, the Agreement on the Conservation
of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic and North Seas (ASCOBANS)
and the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the
Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Contiguous Atlantic Area
(ACCOBAMS) have now released the publication CONSERVING
CETACEANS, providing information on regional issues, the
status of various cetacean species, and the important efforts
of the Convention, its Regional Agreements and WDCS to protect
the world’s migrating cetaceans.
