participates in UN-Day 2003 |

 BONN,
24 October 2003 - The City of Bonn celebrated for the
eighth time its annual UN-Day under the patronage of UNEP-Executive
Director Professor Dr. Klaus Töpfer, Foreign Minister
Mr. Joschka Fischer, the Federal Minister of the Environment
Mr. Jürgen Trittin as well as the Federal Minister for
Economic Co-operation and Development Ms Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul
and Ms Bärbel Dieckmann, Lord Mayor of the City of Bonn.
(pictured on the right). Germany, host country to the
CMS Secretariat and a number of UN-Agencies based in Bonn,
joined the United Nations 30 years ago. -
- All UN-member states celebrate the anniversary of its
charter, which entered into effect on 24 October 1945.
In his UN-Day
Message Secretary General Kofi Annan pointed out
various threats to the United Nations and called upon
the international community to find common solutions to
common problems.

- Various UN agencies based in Bonn as well as the German
Nature Fund, the Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry
for Economic Cooperation and Development and German organisations
dealing with international development projects introduced
their activities related to the International Year of
Freshwater 2003 to the public. About 10,000 people came
to visit the tents with information booths and colourful
exhibitions on the Market Square in front of the Old Town
Hall.

- The CMS Secretariat shared an exhibition tent with
the German Office of the United Nations Information Centre
(UNIC), the Secretariat of the Convention to Combat Desertification
(UNCCD), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate
Change and United Nations Volunteers (UNV). The CMS exhibition
emphasised conservation objectives and activities under
the Convention, its Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding
with regard to species relying on fresh water such as
waterbirds.
